While talking about Indian music, we often associate it with the term ‘Bollywood’. Songs placed among the highs and lows of Bollywood movies seem to dominate Indian pop culture. But, did you know that there is a group of Indian artists thriving beyond this cape of Hindi Cinema?

While being stuck on what was famous, we might have missed out on some crazy music by the Indie music artists of India.

The Indian Indie Music scene is a little underrated but needs all your attention. With their groovy music and perfectly pitched notes, these Indie artists of India are here to make a statement. And we are all ears!

1. The Local Train

This Delhi based Hindi rock band has been touring all around India for more than a year now. They have songs like Dil Mere, Aaoge Tum Kabhi and Aftab in their bag and are ready to add more to their list. The band includes Raman Nego, Paras Thakur, Ramit Mehra and Sahil Sarin as the members. Their debut album was released in 2015 under the title ‘Aalas ka Pedh’ and their latest song Mere Yaar has become a favourite for many.

Based in Bangalore, this powerful rock band began writing music around 24 years ago. They have been featured on various platforms and have released 8 studio albums. They have opened for legendary artists like Guns N’ Roses, Deep Purple, Slash and Jethro Tull. The band members are Bruce Lee Mani on Vocals and Guitar, Rajeev Rajagpoal on Drums and Leslie Charles on Bass. Listen to their albums Jupiter Café and A World Gone Mad among their other works.

3. Prateek Kuhad

Prateek Kuhad came on the radar of indie-pop culture when his song Cold/Mess became a hit. His debut album ‘In Tokens and Charms’ includes songs like Artist and Flames among other beautiful melodies. Prateek Kuhad grew up in Jaipur and went to the US for further studies where he found his breakthrough. Since then, his music has also been featured in movies and TV Shows.

4. Lifafa

Suryakant Sawhney a.k.a Lifafa studied filmmaking in San Francisco, only to return home and find his passion in Music. He started recording Jazz in 2013 for Peter Cat Recording Co. which is a Delhi based hemp jazz outfit. Since then, Lifafa has also recorded and released various singles and albums that are available on all major streaming platforms. You can stream his album ‘Din Raat’ released in 2018 online.

Ashwin, Achyuth, Pai Sailesh and Palee Francis came together to make music that wasn’t just beautiful but also connected with listeners. Their songs are not limited to English, they also add a few lines of Hindi and Tamil here and there. This Kerala based indie band has a lot of surprises in their bag for you. Their songs like Khoj and Believe can be streamed on Youtube and other streaming platforms.

After making their presence known in the music circuit and taking inspiration from Led Zeppelin, RHCP, Tool and Snarky Puppy, Salt rock is set on a road to the top. This Delhi based band produces Funkadelic Rock music which sits perfectly with the groove and lyrics they add to it. Their latest release ‘Anarchy’ has been described as a wake-up call for this generation. The band includes Aditi Sharma on vocals, Sarthak Pradhan on drums, Sarthak Ray on Bass and Mayank Lawrence on Guitar. You can listen to their songs on all major streaming platforms.

This blues-rock indie band based in Mumbai was formed by Kanchan Daniel and Mukesh Lobo in 2012. With Kanchan Daniel being on the vocals and Mukesh Lobo on the Keyboard, the band took flight with their beautiful music and soulful lyrics.

Parvaaz is a Bangalore based Rock band with Khalid Ahmed, Kashif Iqbal, Fidel D’Souza and Sachin Banandur as the members. Their songs including Shaad, Soye Ja and Dast-Ba-Dast have been on top of the charts. Their unique style mixed with their own version of progressive rock is loved by many.
