Black Doves Season 2: Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw's spy thriller returns to Netflix India on 5 November

The spy who married into Downing Street is back. Black Doves Season 2, the British thriller starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, lands on Netflix on 5 November, and subscribers in India get it on the same day as the rest of the world. If the first season was a Christmas card with a bullet hole in it, the sequel looks like it wants to burn down the whole post office.

Created and written by Joe Barton, who also executive produces, the new season is directed by Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes. Netflix has already released the trailer, and the pitch is simple: more secrets, more betrayal and noticeably more firepower.

Where we left Helen and Sam

Quick refresher for anyone who skipped Season 1. Knightley plays Helen Webb, an undercover spy married to Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), a rising star of British politics. For years she has been quietly passing government secrets to the Black Doves, a shadowy organisation with an appetite for exactly that kind of information. Whishaw is Sam Young, her closest friend and a hitman with a conscience that keeps getting in the way of his career.

The first season ended with a violent Christmas showdown in which Sam killed crime boss Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman) and her son Trent to protect Helen. It was messy, funny and strangely tender, and the chemistry between the two leads was the reason people kept pressing "next episode".

Season 2 promises more secrets, more betrayal and noticeably more firepower. Nobody here takes the stairs unarmed.

What Season 2 is about

This time the stakes are even higher. Wallace is preparing to become prime minister, which makes Helen, quite literally, the spy at the heart of government. Then her handler, Mrs Reed (Sarah Lancashire), goes missing, caught up in a plot to undermine Helen's position. Sam, meanwhile, is a low-paid hitman now, dealing with legal trouble and a deal with a mysterious man who got him out of prison. The two reunite to hunt for answers, and the trail leads straight back to the heart of the Black Doves. Barton's own one-line summary is hard to beat: "Downing Street will never be the same."

Returning alongside Knightley, Whishaw, Lancashire and Buchan are Kathryn Hunter as Lenny, Ella Lily Hyland as Williams and Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor. The new arrivals are a serious upgrade:

  • Ambika Mod as Laila, a Black Doves agent
  • Neve Campbell as Cecile Mason, a US defence envoy
  • Babou Ceesay as Mr Conteh, a Black Doves executive
  • Sam Riley as Patrick, who represents a mysterious organisation

An American diplomat parachuted into a very British spy show? We are not complaining.

How to watch it in India

Black Doves Season 2 streams on Netflix from 5 November, as part of a regular subscription. Season 1 is already on the service, so there is time for a catch-up binge before the new episodes arrive. If your taste runs to The Family Man or Special Ops, this is the slicker, more sardonic British cousin: fewer patriotic speeches, more people being stabbed with whatever is lying around the kitchen.

The FHM take

Most spy thrillers take themselves far too seriously. Black Doves works because it doesn't, while still delivering the action and the twists. Put Knightley and Whishaw back in the same frame, add Neve Campbell and Ambika Mod, and you have the most stylish weekend plan on Indian streaming. Clear the calendar.
