One of the most-wanted luxury SUVs in India just got a lot more reachable. Jaguar Land Rover has started assembling the Land Rover Defender 110 at its Pune facility from completely knocked down (CKD) kits, and the savings are being passed straight on to buyers. The locally assembled Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE now starts at Rs 99 lakh (ex-showroom; prices vary by state), and the bigger-engined versions are a whopping Rs 34 lakh cheaper than the fully imported car they replace. Bookings are open online and at dealerships, and deliveries begin on November 15.

The new prices, explained

Local assembly applies to one trim, the X-Dynamic HSE, which you can have with three engines. Here is how the numbers fall (ex-showroom; prices vary by state):

  • 2.0-litre turbo-petrol: Rs 99 lakh, down Rs 14 lakh from Rs 1.13 crore
  • 3.0-litre turbo-petrol: Rs 1.18 crore, down Rs 34 lakh from Rs 1.52 crore
  • 3.0-litre diesel: Rs 1.18 crore, down Rs 34 lakh from Rs 1.52 crore

Put simply, the 2.0-litre petrol Defender 110 has slipped under the Rs 1 crore mark. And Rs 34 lakh is not a rounding error. That is a well-specced mid-size SUV, or a very serious superbike collection, sitting in your bank account instead of going to import duty.

More kit for less money

Here is the part that should make existing owners slightly jealous. JLR has not trimmed the equipment to hit these prices. Instead, a long list of features that used to be optional extras on the imported car are now standard. On the 2.0-litre petrol, that includes adaptive air suspension, three-zone climate control and heated and cooled front seats with memory. The 3.0-litre versions add an electronic active differential with torque vectoring, 20-inch alloy wheels, a head-up display, heated third-row seats and a Meridian sound system.

So you pay less and you get more. That is a sentence we do not get to write very often about luxury cars in India.

What stays imported

Only the Defender 110 in X-Dynamic HSE form gets the Pune treatment. The short-wheelbase Defender 90 and the hardcore, range-topping Defender Octa continue to be shipped in as fully built imports, so their prices stay where they were. If you were waiting for a cheaper Octa, keep waiting.

The Defender 110 is the body style most Indian buyers actually choose anyway: five doors, a proper boot and the option of a third row for weekend getaways with the extended family. It is also the Defender most people picture when they hear the name, which tells you everything about its pull.

Who should be booking one

If you have been circling a Defender and hesitating over the price, this is the moment the maths changes. The 2.0-litre petrol makes the most sense for city-based owners who mostly drive on tarmac but want that boxy, go-anywhere presence. The 3.0-litre diesel remains the pick for highway runs and long road trips, while the 3.0-litre petrol is for those who want the extra punch and do not lose sleep over fuel bills. With identical pricing for the two 3.0-litre engines, the choice comes down purely to how you drive.

Deliveries begin on November 15, so an early booking could mean a new Defender in the driveway in time for the wedding season.

The FHM take

The Defender was already the SUV that made grown men stop and stare. Now it is up to Rs 34 lakh cheaper and better equipped, which is about the best news an Indian SUV fan could ask for. JLR has effectively made India's favourite status symbol a smarter buy. If you were on the fence, consider this your nudge.
