Bombay Talkies

2013 was a year when Bollywood completed its 100 years and gave us a beautiful film yet thought-provoking “Bombay Talkies”. Bombay Talkies is a Hindi language Anthology film consisting of four short films, directed by some talented directors like Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar, and Karan Johar. It is the first anthology film of Bollywood followed by Lust Stories in 2018 and Ghost Stories in 2020.

Each filmmaker in their films shared their own versions of films inspiring people from various tires of society. These popular but underappreciated anthologies feature actors like Rani Mukherjee, Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Ranvir Shorey, Vineet Kumar Singh, and many more. This anthology film was also screened Cannes Film Festival 2013.

Lust Stories 1 & 2

Lust Stories, is an anthology that does not need any introduction. From Radhika Apte’s monologue to Kiara Advani’s orgasm, each scene is still the talk of the town. Lust Stories brought some renowned filmmakers again like Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Karan Johar which gave the audience a real treat.

The Anthology features four short films that revolve around the relationships and sexual desires of four women which star Radhika Apte, Akash Thosar, Bhumi Pednekar, Neil Bhoopalam, Manisha Koirala, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sanjay Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Vicky Kaushal, and Neha Dhupia.

Modern Love Mumbai

Modern Love Mumbai is a romantic comedy anthology streaming on Amazon Prime Video that explores six unique yet universal stories of human connection and love in its varied forms, including romance, platonic, parental, sexual, familial, marital, and self-love in six different short stories starring Fatima Sana Sheikh, Pratik Gandhi, Masaba Gupta, Ranveer Brar, Naseerundin Shah, Arshad Warsi, and many more.

Lipsticks Under My Burkha 

A film that was initially denied to get a release in theatres, trapped in controversies for the sexual scenes, inappropriate words, audio pornography, and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of Society is now known for its Cult following. Four women in pursuit of independence are followed in Lipstick Under My Burkha as they go about their private lives. The main topic of the movie is how, despite all the odds and challenges in their path, they are able to pursue their goals by performing modest acts of bravery.

It stars Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkana Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra, and Plabita Borthakur. The film was screened in many film festivals and won several awards for the story and courage to bring out the story like this.

Ajeeb Daastaaans

Ajeeb Daastaans is another anthology that was produced by Netflix and Karan Johar in 2021. It stars Fatima Sana Sheikh & Jaydeep Ahlawat in Majnu directed by Shashank Khaitan; Nushrat Bharucha & Abhishek Banerjee in Khilauna directed by Raj Mehta; Konkana Sen Sharma & Aditi Rao Hydari in Geeli Puchhi directed by Neeraj Gehwan and Shefali Shah & Manav Kaul in Unkahi directed by Kayoze Irani.

Of all four short films ‘Geeli Puchhi’ and ‘Unkahi’ stands outs and got an appreciation for the story and the roles played by the actors.

Life In a Metro

Anurag Basu’s ‘Life in a Metro’ is special in many ways. From its story, and performances to its song is still fresh in the head of the public. This film is a story of 9 people who live in Mumbai and struggle with their own chaos but somewhere they are connected to each other.

The movie has an ensemble cast of Dharmendra, Irrfan Khan, Kay Kay Menon, Shiney Ahuja, Sharman Joshi, Shilpa Shetty, Konkana Sen Sharma, and Kangana Ranaut that explores the themes like extramarital affairs, infidelity, ambitions, commitment phobia, and love.

In 2022, the makers of LIAM announced its sequel titled ‘Metro…In Dino’ stars Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkana Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan. It is expected to be released on 08th December 2023.
