It is only in our lowest moments that we all trawl through the dating app profiles and ten minutes of swiping are more than enough to remind us why even technology cannot help the Gen-Z species. Afterall, selling yourself in a few pictures and prompts is not easy but there are ways to do it that do not make potential love interests cringe their faces off. Below are the mistakes you may be making on your dating profile that make many women I know swipe left:
Swipe Left –
- Wearing sunglasses in all photos
It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul. So why to hide them up with sunglasses in every photo you have? When a woman sees a photo of a man in sunglasses on a dating life, they usually scroll down to look for photos where they can actually see his eyes. Eventually, isn’t “The eyes, chico. They never lie” like, every man’s favourite quote?
- “If we vibe, we vibe” Bio
This is every second man’s bio on dating app and despite swiping past it every three seconds, women still don’t understand it. What does ‘vibing’ with someone constitute? Does it mean you share the same hobbies and interests? Does it mean you’re sexually compatible? Apart from the vagueness, it’s the complete lack of effort with this one bio, along with the believing that using the word ‘vibe’ makes you cool. Actually, it doesn’t. It makes you a little annoying.
- Googling ‘funny profiles’ and lifting everything off the first page that showed up
Women can tell. Answering “The quickest way to my heart” with “a knife” doesn’t make you funny. It makes women think you’re unoriginal and can’t make the effort of thinking clever thoughts yourself.
- You’re apolitical
Most men are because they have the privilege to be. The few times women have swiped right on apolitical profiles, and realised apolitical is just a code for conservative while listening to men drone on about how women need to “cover up” or stop getting tattoos because it’s unattractive to them. Really, just portray the cliché in a better way.
- You’re so stoned
If googled bios are bad, stoners are worse. The problem is making one thing your entire personality. Your bio? 420 blaze it (leaf emoji). Drinks on me if? You can roll the perfect joint. So, men suggest to challenge dating norms by? Smoking a joint together. Are you incapable of having a conversation where you don’t mention that you’re always lit? Are you incapable of having any conversation without weed? You can’t stay sober for more than 24 hours? It *doesn’t* seems attractive to most women.
Swipe Right –
- Have a picture with you in focus
Nobody wants to see your sunset silhouette photo or an image that’s so zoomed out that you and the tree you’re standing next to can be one and the same. If someone’s interested in you, they naturally want to see what you look like. So, keep at least two or three clear-shot photos of your face on your dating profile.
- What are you looking for?
Nowadays, most dating apps have a “what are you looking for” feature. Use it to be clear about your purpose: be it a casual, short-term hookup or a long-haul committed relationship. This will ensure that you, and the person swiping on you, are on the same page from the very offset. And be honest about it.
- Avoid clichés
Love long walks, travel and your dog? Congratulations, you’re part of the cliché brigade. Most people love long walks, travelling and well… we are sure they’d like your dog too. But what about your favourite book? What’s that one song that kept you going on the darkest of days? Keep it real because women are interested to get deets spilled related to you IRL.
- Don’t be negative
Profiles that start off with a negative quip are always turn-offs. “Don’t swipe right if u typ lk dis”, “if you can’t hold a conversation, swipe left” … they make you sound bitter and arrogant. If you don’t watch out, you’ll find yourself alienated from your every potential match. So, duh hold your attitude dude!
- Put an icebreaker question
Starting up a conversation from scratch, that too with a stranger can be awkward. Here’s where a whacko question, like “What’s something good that happened to you this week?”, can help break the ice. In the long run, it helps building relationships! Afterall, everyone’s intrigued by unique conversations. Hitting such ice breakers can surely beat the heat.
