FDA Guidelines Allow... Maggots, Mould and Rodent Hair
Travellers beware: reports reveal the US Food And Drug Administration makes 'allowances' for certain extra ingredients, from maggots in tinned mushrooms to fly eggs and rodent hair.

Travellers beware – new reports reveal the US Food And Drug Administration (FDA) make ‘allowances’ for certain extra ingredients…
5 maggots
Jar of mushrooms: freshly tinned with “five or more maggots two millimeters or longer per 100 grams”. Nice.

12% mould
It’s ‘fresh’ fruit as long as the “average of mould count is not more than 12%”. Crunch.

1% rodent hair
Peanut butter must not have more than an average of one rodent hair per 100g. Thanks!

325 insect bits
More than 300 bug fragments allowed in every 10 grams. Roast lamb anyone?

15 fly eggs
Tomato ketchup: the FDA permit “no more than 15 fly eggs per 100 grams”. Find something else to mask the flavour of your bad dinner.

60 parasitic cysts
The FDA allows for 60 of these per 100 fish. Wait – parasitic cysts are a bad thing aren’t they?
