Yesterday (22nd October) was a historic day for all Indians who love cricket more than anything. India won its fifth match in a row and this time they beat New Zealand by 4 wickets at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, Dharamsala. In Dharamshala, the team successfully chased down the 274-run target, with former captain Virat Kohli leading the way with a 95-run blow.
Apart from Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja who was batting at 6, also hit the winning runs and guided the team to the historic win. He made 39 runs off 44 balls. India’s captain Rohit Sharma hit 46 runs off 40 balls, whereas Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer scored 26, 27, and 33 respectively. With these 26 runs, Shubman Gill completed his fastest 2000 runs in Men’s ODIs.
On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami who was playing his first match in this tournament secured 5 wickets by giving 54 runs and became ‘Player of the Match’. Other bowlers like Kuldeep Yadav took 2 wickets, whereas Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took 1-1 wicket respectively. The victory also put an end to the “Men in Blue’s” agonizing 20-year ICC match-losing run against New Zealand.
India defeated the runners-up in both 2015 and 2019 in a thrilling match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala to end their 20-year wait for a victory over New Zealand in an ICC competition. With this victory, India made it five wins in a row and is now in a position to advance to the semi-finals.
Earlier in the day, India won the toss and decided to bowl which gave a good start to New Zealand and gave a target of 273 runs to India. Daryl Mitchell scored his fourth century in the ODI and made 130 runs in 127 balls.
Though Virat Kohli failed to make his 49th Century in the ODI tournament by just 5 runs, his wife Anushka Sharma also congratulated his husband by sharing a video on her Instagram story and earmarked it “Always proud of you”. She shared another story and called “Storm Chaser”.
The viewership record also broke during the fifth match of India against New Zealand. As streaming matches on Disney+hotstar is free, the streaming platform garnered the most 4.3 crores (43 million) concurrent viewers in India, which broke the viewership record of the football’s final match between Argentina and France in FIFA World Cup 2022.
