Women Ruling the OTT Shows

Let’s get into the top listed OTT webseries

The Bold Type

The Bold Type was recently made available to the Indian audience by Netflix. The entire show revolves around three different women- Jane Sloan, Sutton Brady and Kat Edison, who are best friends and stand by each other, no matter what. The show unravels their journey, from their personal life to the lifestyle magazine, where they work. There are many important issues that the series covers; and one of them is racism, that the black community still faces in America; which is portrayed by Aisha Dee as Kat Edison. Kat, a black queer, is the social media head at Scarlet Magazine, whereas her friends Jane and Sutton work in the same magazine, as writer and fashion stylist, respectively. The show runs on the complication of how Katie Stevens, as Jane Sloan, is scanned for BRCA mutation (breast cancer) and goes through a tough time, while deciding the correct medical treatment option, for herself. Meanwhile, Meghann Fahy plays the role of Sutton Brady, dealing with dwindling work and family life balance, where she must make tough decisions for her choices in life. All the female characters here are relatable, in one form or the other; as they are highly empowering and make action-oriented decisions. This is a must-watch, if you want to witness how a determined woman can run the world around her.

Valeria

This is a show that depicts the story of a distressed writer, who is in her early 30’s, and is struggling to find solace in her career and married life. The beginning of the show might come across as a bit depressing, but it eventually turns around towards a more positive end. The main character, Valeria played by Diana, depicts how she has reached rock bottom in her writing career, and cannot think of anything appealing, to write about, in her novel. The writer faces a complete block, both on personal as well as professional front. The series further reveals on how the writer finds inspiration with the help of her three best friends and a new man in her life, who really brings some new excitement and fulfilment to her sex life! Furthermore, this story shows the friendship between these three friends, who leaves each other lengthy voice notes; sharing every detail of their lives. The show also encounters how different people have different ways to love; like how Valeria struggles to open up to another guy, after being married to her husband, for more than 5 years.

Bridgeton

The show has been streaming as top 10 on Netflix, for a quite some time now. The show talks about romance and sex, in not just the occasional and stereotypical way, but in a more intriguing and exciting manner. Inspired and adapted by Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novel series, the show can take you on a ride that shall revive the innocence, rawness and joy in you. Depicting the Regency Era (London) in 1813, the story did not fail to portray the reality of the society while balancing it with the inner truth. For instance, it shows how women were expected to be submissive, at the same time it also did not miss the chance to depict what women really wanted and did. The women smoking, demanding the freedom to study and earn for themselves, have children and a say in deciding who they shall marry; each and every topic was thoroughly covered in the entire show. The two leads of the show, Duke of Hastings (Simon), played by Rege-Jean Page and Daphne Bridgerton played by Phoebe Dynevor, takes you on a natural but steamy sexual journey, in the show. Being unabashedly bold on this subject, there is a scene where Simon talks to Daphne about exploring her pleasure points, and assures her that she can touch herself; which was quite mind blowing, given the era that the series was based upon.

SHE

‘She’ has been streaming on Netflix for a while now. It’s an Indian web series, that talks about a women constable, who goes as an undercover agent, to investigate the drug lords coming to the brothels. The story line might be a cliché, but the portrayal of the women is not that of a damsel in distress. The series circulate around the lower-middle class women, Aaditi Pohankar, played by Bhumi Pardeshi, exploring her sexual potential; like how, in one of the scenes, Bhumi oddly gets aroused, during her covert mission as a prostitute. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the story talks about her entire life and the journey she undergoes. Being the only bread earner of the family, she lives a life where she is neither happy with her husband, nor the income a regular police constable earns. ‘She’ comes across as a depiction of a reality somewhere, and can’t be taken as a total work of fiction.
