Will Smith's Trailer: Inside The Babygirl, the Actor's Mobile Mansion

When not making blockbusters, Will Smith kicks back in a 53ft, two-storey, 40-tonne trailer with a recording studio and a screening room. Its creator Ron Anderson explains the method behind the monster truck.

Will Smith offended New Yorkers recently when filming Men In Black III by parking a trailer so gigantic outside their SoHo homes that they became convinced it was blowing raspberries at their normal-sized apartments. But come on, guys – it’s a massive van! Do you really want to peer over the fence complaining about it? Or do you want a little perv around the thing?

Called The Babygirl, Smith’s giganto-trailer was designed by Anderson Mobile Estates – it’s 16 metres long and it’s a double decker. Special features include a recording studio, a screening room, and a kids’ play area, where Willow and Jaden can hold business meetings with their agents.

Will Smith’s trailer caught the eye didn’t it?

Yes, Will’s got the big trailer, but remember, he runs a multimillion dollar corporation – you think that stops when he’s making a movie?

Oh right. So he wouldn’t have been alone in it?

Not remotely. There would have been lots of other people using it.

It’s quite spectacular…

You’re seeing the stuff we built eight years ago. It’s great, but we’re so far beyond that now. We’ve designed trailers that can move 80 troops, completely concealed, into a biochemical hazard.

Wow. So they’re not just for movie stars?

No. All the money that we get from rental goes into research – we have some phenomenal things that we’ve designed. Sadly we can’t really talk about that now. For legal reasons.

Oh. So how does a man get into the trailer designing game?

I have no idea! I was in medicine before this, and I bought a bus for mobile blood testing. Unfortunately the insurance became ridiculous, so we couldn’t get the project off the ground. But I still had this bus. What do I do with it?

Um…

So, we rented the bus out with me as the driver, and before I knew it I was on the road doing rock’n’roll tours. I landed The Monkees’ reunion tour in the ’70s, and became good friends with Davy Jones.

Did he introduce you to all of his famous pals?

He was a huge help, but the one that really gave us a boost was Sly Stallone. We were out buying a new bus, when the phone rang and the girl behind the desk said something like, “Sorry, Mr Stallone, we don’t rent buses out here.” My head span round like something out of The Exorcist , and she said, “But there happens to be a guy here who does.” It all grew from there.

So how did they go from being buses, to these elaborate trailers?

Movie stars in general don’t have a place where they can relax – they can’t go to the grocery store, they can’t go to the gas station, they always have to be looking over their shoulder. I wanted to trigger that little part of their brain that says, “I’m home.” So if I’m building something specific for someone I want to see the environment that makes them happy, and I try to simulate that.

Any weird requests?

One guy requested a thumb print scanner for the bedroom.

Who?

I’m not saying.

Are these mobile homes on movie sets all over the world right now?

In the movie industry, we have seven trailers, which are always in use. Luckily for them, I’m the only guy stupid enough to put that kind of money into a trailer, and, I don’t really make any money from it – I just reinvest it into developing more trailers. I don’t live a crazy lifestyle – we’re just a small family business.

Would you design an amazing trailer park full of these things?

We already have! We just need the right money from the right investor to get it going. They would all be solar and wind powered.
